Hurricane’s gone - but so have islands flamingos...
NASSAU - The southern Bahamian Island of Great Inagua is known
for having a 60,000 strong flamingo flock.
Now, Bahamians wonder if they might end up losing most
after Hurricane Ike ripped across the island,
causing most of the flamingos to escape before Ike arrived
and have not been seen since, which attract bird-watchers from all over the world.
Left behind were 30 dead birds and a few hundred live ones
which took shelter in the mangroves.
Flamingos are sensitive to the barometic pressure and fly off or take cover
when a major storm approaches.
With all their food blown away, life will be hard for any returning birds.
Bird watchers in the southern U.S. are reporting unprecedented flamingo sightings
but are not believed to be from the Bahamas.
Usually, flamingos fly south to Bonaire, Venezuela or Cuba.
